There’s nothing like the ability to be creative for creativity’s sake, so when I was asked to design a baby shower vignette for Mecca Gamble’s Porter Street Photographer Workshop, I couldn’t wait to sample some of my latest ideas for an eager audience.
Often, baby showers are full of soft colors, lush floral and elegant décor elements, carrying out a theme that the future mama is planning inside the new nursery, or one that reflects the artful side of childhood classics. This workshop let me stretch my creativity into something a little more unexpected, and show off ideas to refresh the baby shower stereotype.
I traded in monochromatic pastels for a naturally vibrant color palette of white, black, green, peach and orange. Using the chemistry between a bold contrast and warm colors, we designed a sophisticated baby shower inspired by tribal patterns, island floral and warm textures. The result turned an ordinary driveway and backyard into a tropical oasis. (And what mama-to-be isn’t dreaming of an island getaway!?)
Our statement table continued to play to the strengths of the black-and-white contrast, featuring a charcoal velvet linen topped with round madras chargers, and dotted in burlap napkins with delicate ivory metallic detail, bold black flatware and printed menu cards. White washed chairs surrounded the beautiful tablescape and highlighted the vibrant floral – a mix of tropical (yet refined) oranges, white, coral and black.
To complete our island vibe we designed a lounge for this shower’s guests to enjoy drenched in plenty of the same rich textures, warm colors and unique patterns. Our gorgeous “mommy-to-be” posed in front of lush greenery in a beautiful rust gown, continuing to show off what a powerful statement contrast can make. The overall result was an unexpected mirage of fun colors and textures that brightened up an already beautiful celebration.
Have you seen out-of-the-box style ideas for baby showers? Do you like stepping outside the norms with this lively color palette? I can’t wait to hear what you think – and hope it inspires you to design any celebration around the styles that bring you joy. Cheers to that!
