Fall is almost here, which usually means you’re busily trying to coordinate family outfits, shooting locations and available dates for a perfect holiday-card-worthy family portrait. I know the stress that goes into getting a perfect shot doesn’t always make it the most memorable moment of year, so here are a few tips to make the experience a little easier – maybe even fun!
To start, shop for outfits well before the session is scheduled. Everyone doesn’t have to match, but coordination of colors and using complementary patterns make the big picture a little easier on the eye. I have a daughter that hates wearing dresses, so I know she’s going to feel her best if she can wear pants. Likewise, choose clothes that everyone will be comfortable in during a session – it will show!
On that note, keep that same feeling in mind when you’re selecting a location, and pick one that will naturally allow for a good time. A fun way to make sure it’s a blast it to choose an activity the photographer can capture your family doing together.
Think about your family’s natural high points in the day, and pick a time that your child will have the most energy. For younger kids especially, make sure it’s after a mealtime and after naptime, for bright-eyed, full-bellied pint-sized participants.
Take the time to hash out your portrait session with your photographer before your session begins. Discuss the vision for your photos, and nail down the answers to questions like, do you prefer natural candid shots, or are you looking for formal, portrait style photos?
Ditch the cheese, but keep it lively and inspired by coming up with a fun chant for everyone to recite that will create natural smiles instead of stiff ones.
Most importantly, this is a rare time to capture your family’s unique, fun chemistry to share with others, so remember to just relax and have fun! Embrace both the sillies and the sweets – that picture perfect family time will come through in the final photos.
