One of my favorite trends in 2018 was the idea of throwing one party for multiple siblings. Not only did it give parents the opportunity to go bigger with their party goals, but with a little creativity, it let me deliver something completely unique for my clients. This one gave me the challenge of coming up with a theme that would equally delight both the birthday boy and girl … and combining many young people’s love for all things under (and on) the sea.
We created this mermaid-pirate party design inside my client’s home, but transformed their everyday living quarters into something fantastical and unforgettable. To set the tone, guests entered through a black and white, larger-than-life balloon arch marked with silly pirate characters and balloon anchors. We used balloon installations throughout the party, framing some of the fun afternoon with a bubbly accent.
One of the most popular spots was the dress-up area, where kids could choose their costume for the day – whether mermaid or pirate, it put them all in the party spirit, unifying a theme that pleased both the girls and the boys.
Blue-hued balloons also highlighted the extravagant dessert display in the “under the sea” party tent where floating jellyfish hung from above and kids perused character-iced cookies, mermaid tail and treasure map Rice Krispy treats and more sea-themed sweet treats made with bright colors and cute details. Little pirates and mermaids made their way to elegantly embellished seats and place settings where they could dig into – ARG! – their plate of goodies, or hold out for the multi-tiered undersea adventure cake honoring both birthday kids.
It was so fun to watch the kids have such a good time – whether seeing their eyes light up over the fun details of the dessert table, or hearing laughter as they picked out their costumes. I’ll say, though, that my favorite part about this party design was that it was fresh and modern but still fun! Plus, it featured lots of whimsical elements for both the kids and the adults to revel in and remember forever. It reminds me that with a little creativity, any party design can truly delight every guest – no matter what age they are!
