As a planner, I’ve designed a lot of parties for a lot of different kinds of clients. The unifying element is that every party strives to be a modern, fresh take on a tradition that’s been around for years. Baby showers are no different! And while the classic elements are still fun – when done right – there’s a way to put your personality stamp on a fun fete and make it both memorable and timeless for every guest.
Plug Your Personality. Instead of a theme that will go out of style, look to your own personality, your favorite city or to sentimental items as the starting point for your shower design. For Cardi B, it was her hometown of Bronx, NY that inspired an edgy, flavorful theme full of creative elements. For Letoya Luckett, we honored her late grandmother’s love of butterflies for design inspiration that proved artful and timeless over several generations. Since our personalities are pretty much locked in, you’ll never wince when you look back on a party inspired by its taste.
Swap Games for Creative Interaction. Shower games can be fun, but think beyond typical shower games to entertain your guests. A photo booth allows guests to leave with a keepsake from the event, and have fun composing the perfect shots. If you decide to keep a copy – instant (and sophisticated) scrapbook for the baby’s memory box. Or, take a cue from my love for my clients’ personalities. I like to poll their favorite hobbies or interests for ideas to keep guests busy at a baby shower. At Cardi B’s shower, of course, there had to be a big dance floor for guests to have a good time. At the Rand’s shower, we piqued the men’s interest with a lounge created especially for them to watch the big game and smoke cigars.
Make it custom. Decor made especially for the new baby (or babies!) that gets installed in the nursery after the shower is a treasured keepsake and a huge to-do marked off the parents-to-be’s list, not to mention a relief to the nursery budget that also delivers big on sentimentality. I loved creating the Rand baby library with books signed by guests – something for the family to enjoy for years to come. At the butterfly shower, our paper designer created a smaller scale replica of our butterfly wall to hang as art in the nursery. Both helped me deliver ways for neither couple to ever forget the beautiful celebration thrown in honor of their new babies.
Keep it sweet. Long live fabulous dessert displays! This creative and visually stimulating installment not only adds a beautiful design element to the shower, but it also gives guests a slew of sweet treats to enjoy. You can make this double as a favor station as well, creating custom boxes for guests to take treats home.
Let everyone be a guest. So much goes into planning, executing, hosting and cleaning up these kinds of events. Hire a planner so the guests of honor can truly enjoy the day with all of their friends and family. An event staff allows you to truly enjoy a special party and your precious time with loved ones, instead of worrying about logistics or solving issues that come up. You’ll even have time to indulge in that dessert display yourself.
No matter what kind of party you want to throw, hosting a celebration that nods to personalities – rather than themes – will never go out of style. And those are the kind of memories we want to share with our babies one day!
