Everyone loves the fun and pretty of a wedding. And no one wants to think about the budget and the numbers. But setting your budget is a crucial first step to wedding planning. Here are a few reasons why:
1. You need to see the big picture before you start booking your vendors.
You don’t want to book a venue that’s 80% of your budget and then not have enough funds to get the other elements that are important to you. Or what good is it to hire a fabulous photographer and then not have enough budget left to allocate to items that are crucial to the day? By setting your budget from the beginning, you can have an idea of how much you need to spend in each area to stay within your overall budget.
One of the first steps we do for our clients is to create an itemized budget so you can clearly see the numbers and feel comfortable with what you’re spending and know you’re not missing anything in the budget.
2. Everyone that is paying for the wedding needs to be on the same page.
Having the budget conversation can feel awkward but can save so much stress later on. You want to manage everyone’s expectations to be sure that everyone is clear on their contribution and how it will be used.
3. You need to be able to give your number to your planner so we know to guide you.
One of the first questions we ask is “what’s your budget”? And it’s not because we want to drive your budget, but it’s so we know how to guide you. I don’t want to take you to a venue with a $50k food and beverage minimum if your budget is $50k. I want to find ways to maximize the investment you can spend. And I don’t have a place to start if I don’t have your number.
I encourage you to not be afraid of the budget conversation. Have it early on and get it out of the way, so you can focus on the fun and pretty of the wedding!
