A Southern Twist on Tradition | A Butterfly Baby Shower

From my very first meeting with Letoya Luckett, I knew I was going to love designing her baby shower. A sweet and sassy Southern Belle expecting her first child, she wanted a co-ed brunch where her friends and family could gather to celebrate together. That meant plenty of good food and a fun spin on traditional shower games, but it also included her own vision for something creative and inspiring. And when she told me about her grandmother’s love for butterflies and how she’d like to honor her in some way, I knew we had to start working on a butterfly oasis.

One of the reasons I loved this design was how we were able to completely transform the party space we started with. We chose Simon’s restaurant, and took the traditional private dining room from subtle and standard to majestic butterfly garden. It speaks to the power of being able to envision your event as the finished product – we combined clean gray linens with modern white chairs to set an even tone, then topped it with vibrant, whimsical chargers, lush floral and, of course, plenty of butterfly accents. Once inside, guests wouldn’t be able to guess they were in a restaurant!

That’s also what I love about good themes – they let your guests be transported to another place, even when it’s only for a couple of hours, and potentially not that far from home. When Letoya’s guests arrived, they posed in front of a jaw-dropping butterfly backdrop made up of hundreds of delicate paper butterflies.

From there, everyone enjoyed a seated custom Southern style brunch before playing a few fun games. Instead of a dessert table, we created a dessert meadow, woven together with blooming floral and floating butterflies. The decadent display included a custom cake, adorable donuts, fun cake pops, colorful macarons and – in honor of our mama-to-be – a myriad of mini southern pies.

I always love getting to work with clients who let me run with their visions – especially when it lets me show them how we can treasure our favorite traditions, while still making it unique and memorable. It was such a joy to work with Letoya, and I know her memories as a new mama will include being surrounded by loved ones to celebrate their sweet baby girl. Cheers to this sweet new family!
